It’s apparent from the two changes that Google wants to leave no room for any rival to get a footing against it! Google on Tuesday introduced two changes to its search results pages, which, according to Google, will help leading users more efficaciously to the information they were searching.
Google stated that it will use a new technology to better comprehend what people are searching online. The giant told that the new technology will help showing longer text lines, or snippets, after the search title, with relevant words in bold.
According to Google, the two changes are aimed to fetch better results for searches with lots of keywords in them. In a Google blog post, giant wrote, “There’s now a searches related to: list at the bottom of search results pages that provide other keyword strings related in concept to your search, especially for longer strings of words,” and “Longer keyword searches of three words or more will bring up a bit of a snippet of text from relevant pages, giving people a better idea of whether that page is worth clicking on”.
In a post on the corporate blog, the company executives wrote, “We’re constantly looking for ways to get you to the Web page you want as quickly as possible.”
Google’s search changes are based on the Orion search technology, acquired by Google in late 2006. The technology helps to understand the broader idea behind what someone is searching, rather than the specific words. It facilitates semantic search that helps users find related concepts associated with the searched words, instead of just showing the sources matching the words.
Greg Sterling, an editor at the industry website Search Engine Land, said, “It’s (the technology is) based on the better understanding of pages in real time, and the ability to relate those pages to the query.”
WolframAlpha, startup search engine from noted Mathematica inventor Stephen Wolfram, is latest to offer semantic searches. Microsoft acquired the semantic search startup Powerset last year. Yahoo is offering Search BOSS to allow Web developers to create custom search engines.
